Today I will try to explain Leaky Gut Syndrome, what it means, what causes leaky Gut and how to heal leaky gut naturally. It is important to understand all this so that you can start healing your gut early before it starts causing more serious damage to your body, such as autoimmune diseases. I am not a Doctor or Naturopath, I am sharing with you what I have learned over the years regarding this subject and through personal experience.
What is Leaky Gut?
Well to put it simply it is the lining of our gut that is damaged and food particles from our meals pass through our gut lining into the blood stream. Our gut lining is also covered in a thick layer of mucus that is there to protect our gut lining. That mucus layer is perforated, damaged, and that is why it is allowing food particles to get out of our gut into the bloodstream, just as the image to the left illustrates.
This will cause inflammation as bacteria and food allergens enter our bloodstream. If left untreated, it will also affect our immune system. This in turn will cause autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Chon’s, Lupus and ceoliac disease.
What causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?
I will list a few factors in our lifestyles that contribute to a leaky gut but personally, I believe that stress is the number one enemy for our gut followed by GMO foods such as wheat, and other grains, junk food such as refined carbs, fried foods, sugar, soft drinks, diet soft drinks that contain Aspartame, alcohol, drugs, certain medications, certain pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications.
Main contributors to a Leaky Gut:
- Imbalances in our Gut Microbiome caused by poor diet and antibiotics
- Stress – Stressing about everyday problems (your job, your relationship, your kids) and particularly about issues that you feel you can not resolve whether it be personal, family or friends.
- GMO wheat and other grains and foods
- Poor nutrition, not eating a variety of veggies, greens, fruits, nuts, high fiber foods, etc.
- Certain medications

Foods to avoid for leaky gut
From my personal experience, the foods that I crave most, will most likely harm my gut the most. Foods such as chocolate, ice-cream, savory and sweet pastries, biscuits, cakes, fried food. I will list a few foods to avoid when suffering from a leaky gut.
– Processed foods (wheat & grain products) such as pies, crackers, muesli bars, chips, packet meals
– Refined Oils such as Canola, sunflower, safflower and soybean
– Artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, sucralose and saccharin
– Sugary foods such as sugary cereals, candybars, cookies, doughnuts, pastries
– Dairy and gluten foods such as milk, cheese, bread, ice-cream, pasta, cereals, wheat flour, couscous, barkey, rye, etc.
– Alcohol, soda, sugary drinks, diet soft drinks (contains Aspartame)
Foods that help heal a leaky gut
As we have just gone through the list of foods to avoid if you have leaky gut, you may be worried that there is nothing left to eat. This is because we are all used to eating very unhealthy food.
However, don’t despair, there are a lot of good food choices that you can enjoy. For example, instead of pasta you can choose brown or white rice.
As for wheat products, it doesn’t mean you will never be eating bread, pasta and pastries again. You will simply be avoiding them for a few months until your gut lining heals. After that you will gradually add back wheat and dairy in small amounts and one by one so that you do not overwhelm your digestive system. From then on, you will enjoy those foods in moderation.
For now, while you heal, you can have cultured dairy products such as yoghurt and kefir. These help to heal the gut lining and also populate your gut with good bacteria.
To heal the gut lining always think ‘fiber’ and ‘good bacteria’. You need the fiber as your ‘prebiotic’ to strengthen the gut lining and to establish the perfect environment in which ‘good bacteria’ will thrive.
If you take a probiotic daily but don’t consume ‘prebiotics’ (fiber), the good gut flora that is introduced by the probiotic will only survive 2 weeks in your gut. This is why we need both prebiotics and probiotics together.
Here’s a list of foods that you should consume to start repairing your leaky gut and start feeling amazing again:
- Cultured dairy products such as kefir and yoghurt. These are loaded with friendly bacteria (Probiotis) which will help repopulate your gut with friendly bacteria. - Miso – a Japanese staple food used in soups and dressings. It is made out of fermented soy beans and contains good bacteria and enzymes that help with digestion.

- Raw nuts especially raw almonds. Raw almonds are high in fiber and are loaded with fatty acids and polyphenol compounds which helps good bacteria to grow in the gut.
- Low fodmap fruits such as berries, bananas, grapes, oranges and kiwi fruit. They are loaded with good fiber that the good bacteria thrives on.
- Garlic contains antibacterial and antifungal properties which is beneficial for gut flora. It also keeps yeast under control. Yeast overgrowth in the gut (candida) can contribute to leaky gut. Garlic is tasty and can be added to so many recipes to give it flavour. It can also be taken in capsule form but fresh is best.
- Ginger is known to stimulate production of stomach acid which in turn helps to digest food properly and helps with nutrient assimilation. You can either add grated ginger to recipes or even drink it as a tea.
- Gluten Free Grains such as brown rice, white rice, gluten free oats, buckwheat, amaranth, sorghum
- Healthy Fats such as avocado, avocado oil, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil
